The American Type Founders Company was founded in 1892, and had 26 branch plants in cities including New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Havana, Cuba, and Mexico City. But Jersey City was its headquarters, and 300 Communipaw Avenue was the Company's Central Foundry Plant. This building was the largest type foundry in the world, and the ATF held a monopoly on the type industry until modernized typesetting technologies made movable type obsolete.
